Affordable

On the Planning Board, I learned the importance of including affordable housing as part of new developments. Ashland is a diverse community that includes a broad range of incomes, which adds greatly to our community. We also have a large senior population. As we grow, we need to maintain a broad selection of housing options to avoid pricing out segments of our population.

Ashland has never passed an operational override, despite a number of well-organized efforts to increase funding for town services. After the last attempt, we struggled for several years, having to close school libraries and make other painful cuts, but with careful planning, we've recovered and thrived. Keeping our taxes in check is a core community value.

Going forward, we must live within our means. This requires good long-term planning to avoid any surprises, which is one of many reasons I'm excited about our Comprehensive Plan process that is underway now. As we grow as a community, we need to do so with intention and planning, so that we have the resources our community needs.
