Allow me to introduce myself.
As you know, my name is Preston Crow. My wife Catherine and I moved to
Ashland in 1999 from Cambridge. I work as a software engineer at DellEMC in Hopkinton,
and Catherine is a teacher, having taught in a mix of private, charter, and public schools, and has also been involved in a number of drama groups and theatrical productions.
We attend the Presbyterian Church in Sudbury where I am on the Board of Trustees.
I was born and raised in Boise, Idaho, and graduated from Boise High
in 1987. I went to college at Northwest
Nazarene College (since renamed to University), and then went to
Dartmouth College in New
Hampshire for graduate school. It was there that I not only received
my Master's degree, but more importantly also met my lovely wife. After
living in her home state of New Jersey, we moved to Cambridge where I
briefly worked for The Open Group before being hired by EMC. So that
brought us to Ashland, where we expect to remain for many years to
come.
I have a number of hobbies. I enjoy walking in the town forest and hiking.
When the weather is nice, I like to commute to work by bicycle. I never
fully outgrew playing with LEGOs, and am a member of NELUG, an adult LEGO club. I'm also an
active member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, a medieval
recreation soceity.
I have long had a strong interest in politics and government. Since moving
to Ashland, I have attended town meetings and followed other aspects of the
town on the cable channel. In 2004, I ran for Selectman. While I lost
that race, I learned much about the town through the process, and the
following year successfully ran for a seat on the Planning Board, where I
served for fifteen years, often as chair. I helped to found the
Sustainability Committee and served on that for a number of years. I am
now a member of the Conservation Commission.
